The Essential Pain Management partnership has launched a free EPM online learning course.
Recognising the challenges that COVID-19 presents in providing face-to-face education, those involved in authoring and delivering the Essential Pain Management have taken the traditional EPM training course – usually delivered face-to-face, and created a fully online, interactive, do-at-your-own-pace EPM online course.
EPM online is not intended to replace face-to-face EPM but will add an additional, accessible resource to the EPM suite of education.
Learning to recognise, assess and treat pain
EPM online provides a primer in the essentials of pain management. It covers the tools that can be used to recognise, assess and record pain, some physiology and pathophysiology of the nerve pathways and a review of both non-pharmacological and pharmacological options to treat pain.
The course enables participants to recognise and overcome barriers to pain management and reiterate the importance of continuing to reassess pain, even after treatment has been provided.
The platform provides learners with a series of cases using videos to demonstrate the use of EPM in patients with acute trauma and postoperative pain, cancer pain and chronic non-cancer pain.
How it works
The course is run through the Praxhub platform, users will just need to register for Praxhub to access the course, but this process is quick, easy and free.

You will be prompted to register or to log-in if you are already registered. Once you have done this, you’ll be taken directly to the EPM online page, where you can commence the course.
You can pause and come back to the course at any time, the full course will take approximately 2.5 hours. Once you receive an 80% pass rate, you will be able to download a certificate of completion. EPM faculty will contact those who have completed EPM online, three-four times a year, to invite them to participate in a live, zoom-based small group case discussion session.
The EPM partnership
EPM online has been developed in a partnership between the Australia & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and Interplast Australia & New Zealand (Interplast) and Praxhub, with funding from ANZCA, Interplast and the Australian Government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Australian NGO Cooperation Program, and support from the following organisations:
