WFSA Fellowship Programme

What are fellowships?

The WFSA offers its Fellowships to anaesthesiologists from low and middle-income countries to increase their skillset and become leaders for anaesthesia once they return to their home countries.

WFSA Fellowships are undertaken by trained anaesthesia providers who want to develop their careers by specialising or sub-specialising. The programme has a lasting impact both on the skills and professional development of the individuals, as well as their colleagues and patients back home.

Beginning with 3 fellows in 1996, in 25 years the programme has grown to over 400 fellows from 62 countries trained across 12 specialties.

Applying to a WFSA fellowship

Fellowships open to applicants on a rolling case by case basis, but a suitable applicant should fit the following criteria:

  • Must be a qualified physician and fully trained in anaesthesia as per the regulations of their home country.
  • Must be supported in their application by their own National Anaesthesiology Society
  • Must be supported in their application by their current workplace
  • Must be returning to a recognised post in their country of origin
  • Early-career anaesthesiologists are preferred
  • Should preferably be working in a teaching hospital
  • Must have a valid passport if travelling out-of-country
