World Anaesthesia Day 2023 – Anaesthesia and Cancer Care

Join us on World Anaesthesia Day by celebrating the leadership and expertise anaesthesiologists bring to cancer care

On 16 October anaesthesia professionals will celebrate World Anaesthesia Day 2023 by taking to social media to highlight their leadership and expertise in cancer care.

The global burden of cancer is growing – the number of cases is set to increase from 19∙3 to 28∙4 million by 2040. From general pain management to critical care, adequate resourcing of anaesthesia is paramount in being able to provide treatment of cancer worldwide.

OncoAnaesthesia

80% of patients with cancer will require anaesthesia and surgical care for treatment or palliation.

Management of cancer patients requires well-coordinated multidisciplinary care, and anaesthesia must be seen as a core component of this and resourced appropriately.

Reflecting the utility and diversity of the speciality, anaesthesiologists work at multiple points along the cancer patient’s journey, from diagnosis to surgical treatment and all areas of pain management/ palliative care.

The quality of anaesthesia care matters. Good-quality, safe anaesthesia care for cancer patients depends on well-trained anaesthesia professionals with a specialised set of knowledge and skills.

In many parts of the world, cancer patients are not receiving the care they need because of inadequate resourcing. We need to work together to advocate for greater resourcing, identify ways to improve care and optimise patient outcomes.

World Anaesthesia Day 2023 is about the global anaesthesia community celebrating and sharing personal and professional expertise. Sharing on their social media feeds the techniques that they employ every day to ensure patient safety.
