Metrics and Reporting Criteria for Surgery, Anaesthesia, & Obstetrics
Better Data For BETTER CARE
Surgery Metrics empowers stakeholders to collect and interpret data to make informed decisions, allocate resources effectively, and drive continuous quality improvement.
Metrics act as a guide to policymakers in the implementation and interpretation of data in surgery and anaesthesia. The data outputs aim to meet the World Health Assembly’s mandate in Resolution 68/15 for ‘meaningful and reliable information’ on surgical delivery, towards achieving SGD 3 to ‘ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages’.

ABOUT
Global experts were brought together to review and refine the original indicators proposed by the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. Through a series of consensus-driven Utstein meetings, the experts standardised definitions and methodologies, resulting in five core Global Surgery Metrics to be collected at the national level.
METRICS METADATA TOOLKITS
The MetaData Toolkit and accompanying Data Dictionary provide standardised definitions, methodologies, and guidance for collecting and interpreting key indicators.
PILOT PROJECTS
The pilots in South Africa and Ghana tested and refined the implementation of standardised surgery, obstetric, and anaesthesia indicators in real-world settings, providing critical insights to guide regional and global scale-up.
WHO WE ARE
Encompassing over 50 international experts, spanning 23 countries and all six WHO regions, the initiative is a collaboration between anaesthesiologists, surgeons, obstetricians, health economists, public health experts, and data specialists.
