Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Foundation

From 2022-2024, WFSA partnered with the J&J Foundation to deliver education and training on safer anaesthesia care in Makueni County, Kenya, and Blantyre, Malawi.
Kenya
In Kenya, we focused on preventing and treating Obstetric Fistula (OF) through education, safer births, surgical anaesthesia, post-surgical care, and pain management.
Key achievements:
- Clinical inception visit to Mother & Child Hospital in Makueni County to assess the prevalence of OF.
- Supporting three Kenyan anaesthesiologists to attend the 8th All Africa Anaesthesia Congress in Kigali, Rwanda.
- Delivering two SAFE Obstetric courses with a new knowledge and skills module on OF. These courses trained over 80% of the anaesthesia providers in Makueni County on safer anaesthesia care for OF.
In October 2024, we will deliver two more SAFE Obstetric courses with the new OF module, supported by a strong local faculty in collaboration with the Kenyan Society of Anaesthesiologists (KSA) to ensure sustainability.

Malawi
In Malawi, we focused on anaesthesia for long-bone fractures (LBF), providing training at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and surrounding district hospitals.
Key achievements:
- Clinical inception visit to five district hospitals to conduct a baseline survey using the Anaesthesia Facility Assessment Tool (AFAT).
- Supporting one Malawian anaesthesiologist to attend the 8th All Africa Anaesthesia Congress in Kigali, Rwanda.
- Supporting one Anaesthesia Resident in the MMED course and five Anaesthesia Clinical Officers (ACOs) in their 18-month training
- Delivering an Essential Pain Management (EPM) workshop to 80 multidisciplinary participants including ACOs, orthopaedic clinical officers and nurses, and supporting 10 clinicians to become EPM trainers.
- We developed and piloted a ‘Safer Long-Bone Fracture’ course, training 32 anaesthesia professionals from nine hospitals through lectures, case discussions, skills training, and simulations. New modules covered LBF management, polytrauma surgery, and fascia iliac compartment block.
