Global Health Partnerships (GHP)

WFSA UK’s multi-project partnership with Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET) supports the development and evolution of WFSA’s medical education.
PBM in Ethiopia
Responding to what WHO characterises as ‘one of the world’s biggest, largely preventable, yet greatly underestimated public health and health-economic burdens’, WFSA UK will work with partners in Ethiopia to develop and pilot a course to establish training faculty for improved Perioperative Patient Blood Management (PPBM).
There is an urgent need for improved patient blood management to deal with anaemia, blood loss and coagulopathies (bleeding disorders). This project will allow WFSA UK, the Ethiopian Society of Anesthesiologists (ESA), and Global Partners for Improving Surgical Systems (GPISS) the opportunity to develop a course relevant to low resource settings, building on WFSA’s existing programme of work for PPBM.
This project in Ethiopia will run for 10 months, and the main output will be a PPBM facilitator course available for use in LMIC.

Sickle Cell Disease in Ghana
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is prevalent in Ghana, causing acute and chronic episodes of pain for those suffering from the condition. With support from GHP, we integrated case-studies on pain management for SCD into our existing Essential Pain Management (EPM) course, and delivered two EPM programmes in Ghana, centred on Accra and Kumasi.
Key achievements
Delivered in 2024, WFSA UK and the Ghana Anaesthetist Society (GAS) trained nearly 200 Ghanaian clinicians involved in the pain management of their patients. As a multidisciplinary programme, we were able to include anaesthesiologists, nurses, doctors, and haematologists as participants on our GHP supported EPM courses.
