Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS)

Past collaboration
WFSA UK’s multi-year partnership with Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) strengthens anaesthesia capacity and local leadership across Africa through WFSA-led training.
From 2019-2022, the ‘SAFE Mothers and Newborns: Obstetric Anaesthesia Training in Congo – Brazzaville’ project improved anaesthesia and peri-operative care for pregnant women and babies in the Republic of Congo (RoC).
This partnership supported four Safer Anaesthesia From Education (SAFE) Obstetric courses in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire which trained a total of 140 clinicians and 8 new SAFE trainers through a Training of Trainers (ToT) course.

The partnership also supported two anaesthesiologists and the lead SAFE trainer from RoC to attend the 8th All Africa Anaesthesia Congress (AAAC) 2022 in Rwanda, enabling them to learn, network, and build connections for sustaining the initiative beyond the project.
Future Opportunities
WFSA is expanding its collaboration with EKFS through a new three-year project, ‘Responding to the Anaesthesia and Surgical Crisis in Africa’, launching on 1st July 2024.
This initiative will enhance anaesthesia capacity, leadership, and education across the region, improving perioperative care. A multifaceted approach, including Continuing Medical Education (CME), will equip anaesthesia professionals to drive sustainable improvements in their field.
Key activities:
- Fellowships offered to early career anaesthesiologists from Africa to hosting institutions in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the US.
- Scholarships offered to selected anaesthesiologists identified as future leaders in anaesthesia to attend World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA) convening in Marrakesh, Morocco, in 2026.
- WFSA’s Liberian Anaesthesia Capacity Building Programme will be supported, which will enable Liberian Anaesthesia Professionals to continue their anaesthesia training under the West African College of Surgeons (WACS).
- SAFE Obstetrics and SAFE Paediatrics courses are to be delivered in Morocco and Zambia in partnership with the national anaesthesia societies.
WFSA will work in collaboration with the key stakeholders listed below to ensure the success of the project and to achieve our goal of contributing to safe anaesthesia and perioperative care in Africa.
