Multi-Year Projects

Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS)

Past Collaboration

WFSA UK’s multi-year partnership with Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) is working to strengthen anaesthesia capacity and local champions across Africa through WFSA-led training.

From 2019-2022, the “SAFE Mothers and New-borns: Obstetric Anaesthesia Training in Congo – Brazzaville” project focused on improving the anaesthesia provision and peri-operative care for pregnant mothers and their babies in the Republic of Congo (RoC). This partnership supported four Safer Anaesthesia From Education (SAFE) Obstetric courses in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire which trained a total of 140 clinicians and 8 new SAFE trainers through a Training of Trainers (ToT) course.

The partnership also supported two anaesthesiologists and the lead SAFE trainer from RoC to attend the 8th All Africa Anaesthesia Congress (AAAC) 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda. This provided a platform for them to learn and interact with SAFE Trainers and clinical educators from across the world, and build the networks needed to sustain such initiatives beyond the scope of this project.

Future Opportunities

WFSA is excited to continue our collaboration with EKFS with a new multi-year project “Responding to the Anaesthesia and Surgical Crisis in Africa”. The 3-year project, launching on 1st July 2024, will respond to the anaesthesia and surgical crisis in Africa, by developing the capacity, agency, and leadership potential of anaesthesia professionals across the region.

Our project will make a significant contribution towards safer anaesthesia and perioperative care in Africa. We will achieve this by recognising and developing the leadership potential of Anaesthesia Professionals in Africa, supporting them to drive forward improvements in their specialty and the quality of care for their patients.

Our approach is multifaceted, providing a range of Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities to build capacity and leadership, and to address some of the significant challenges associated with anaesthesia and perioperative care in the region.

Key activities which will be delivered under the grant include:

  • Fellowships offered to early career anaesthesiologists from Africa to hosting institutions in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the US.
  • Scholarships offered to selected anaesthesiologists identified as future leaders in anaesthesia to attend World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA) convening in Marrakesh, Morocco, in 2026.
  • WFSA’s Liberian Anaesthesia Capacity Building Programme will be supported, which will enable Liberian Anaesthesia Professionals to continue their anaesthesia training under the West African College of Surgeons (WACS).
  • SAFE Obstetrics and SAFE Paediatrics courses to be delivered in Morocco and Zambia in partnership with the national anaesthesia societies.

WFSA will work in collaboration with the key stakeholders listed below to ensure the success of the project and to achieve our goal of contributing to safe anaesthesia and perioperative care in Africa:
