WHO Hosts Webinar on Patient Blood Management

Prof Daniela Filipescu presented at the WHO webinar, focusing on the role of anaesthesiologists in Patient Blood Management (PBM). The session highlighted strategies and country experiences to improve global blood health.

On 18 November, the World Health Organization (WHO) hosted a webinar on WHO Guidance on Implementing Patient Blood Management to Improve Global Blood Health Status. The event brought together WHO representatives, anaesthesiology experts, and participants worldwide to discuss strategies for improving blood health and reducing transfusion dependency.

Prof Daniela Filipescu representing WFSA, highlighted the key role anaesthesiologists play in implementing PBM. She explained that PBM helps decrease transfusion dependency and increase equity in healthcare by ensuring more patients can access safe surgery. “The role of anaesthesiologists in patient blood management implementations is important, especially in the perioperative period,” she said, emphasizing their involvement before, during, and after surgery.

WFSA has supported the PBM Santa Cruz Declaration signed during the 2022 Latin American Congress of Anaesthesiologists (CLASA) and has since promoted PBM across our Member Societies through advocacy and engagement with policymakers.

The full webinar, including Prof Filipescu’s presentation and country case studies, is available to watch on the WHO webinar recording page.
