WFSA, in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, brings together experts to strengthen blood management across African health systems.
Access to safe blood is essential for surgery, anaesthesia, and wider health care, yet many countries in Africa face major challenges in securing and managing this precious resource. At WHO RC75, on Sunday 24 August, WFSA organised a dedicated side-event in Lusaka, Zambia on strengthening blood management systems across the continent.
This 90-minute session featured country case studies from Zambia, Ethiopia, and Rwanda, alongside insights from regional policy leaders. Panellists shared perspectives from blood transfusion services, clinical practice, policy development, and personal experience.
Speakers included:
- Dr Sompwe Mwansa (Zambian Society of Anaesthesiologists) – setting the scene on Africa’s blood crisis and the role of patient blood management (PBM).
- Dr Masiku Phiri (Zambia National Blood Transfusion Service) – the national perspective on challenges and opportunities for safe blood access.
- Dr Tariku A. Soboka (Ethiopian Society of Anesthesiologists Professionals Association) – policy and clinical perspectives from Ethiopia.
- Dr Francoise Nizeyimana (Rwandan Society of Anaesthesiologists) – a personal view on workforce strengthening and training to improve blood services.
- Prof Emmanuel Makasa (SADC Technical Experts Working Group on Surgical Healthcare) – how to turn policies and frameworks into practical improvements for patient care.
