The WFSA Scholarship Programme empowers early-career anaesthesiologists by providing access to education, research, mentorship, and global professional networks.
The World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA) brings together anaesthesiologists from around the world to share knowledge, discuss new developments, and explore innovations that can improve patient care.
For many early-career anaesthesiologists from low and middle-income countries, attending an international congress can be difficult or out of reach. Through the WFSA Scholarship Programme, 35 scholars from 24 countries were able to attend WCA2026 in Marrakech, Morocco, from 15 to 19 April 2026.
During five days at the Congress, scholars took part in scientific sessions, practical workshops, networking events, research presentations, and activities designed to support their professional development. They learned from international experts, connected with colleagues from across the world, and gained new ideas and skills to apply in their own hospitals and communities.
The scholarships also created opportunities for scholars to present their research, build international professional networks, and develop future collaborations. Sixteen scholars took part in the Global Leadership in Anaesthesia (GLiA) Course, strengthening their skills in communication, teamwork, leadership, and professional development.

The impact of the scholarship experience extends beyond the Congress. Scholars returned home with new knowledge, practical skills, professional connections, and renewed motivation.
Since 2008, the WFSA Scholarship Programme has supported more than 370 scholars from 87 countries to attend 41 regional and international congresses in person. A further 675 scholars have been supported to participate virtually. By creating access to education, research, mentorship, and international collaboration, the programme is helping to strengthen the global anaesthesia workforce and develop future leaders.
