Prof Nabil M Elkassabany has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of Update in Anaesthesia (UIA) marking a new phase in the journal’s continued growth while recognising the lasting contributions of outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Prof Chris Lundgren.
WFSA Board members, UIA editors, and delegates gathered at a special celebratory session during the World Congress of Anaesthesiology (WCA) to announce Prof Elkassabany’s appointment.
Prof Elkassabany is the John C. Rolwingson Professor of Anaesthesiology at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Medical Director of the Main Operating Rooms. He brings a strong track record in academic publishing, having held editorial roles with leading journals, including Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, alongside a wide range of contributions to the field over many years.
His appointment marks an important step in the continued development of Update in Anaesthesia, a publication that plays a central role in advancing accessible, practical education for anaesthesia professionals worldwide.
The WFSA Board also extended its sincere thanks to Prof Chris Lundgren for her outstanding service as Editor-in-Chief. Over many years, she has played a pivotal role in shaping Update in Anaesthesia, first as a member of the Editorial Board and later as Editor-in-Chief. Her leadership has strengthened the journal’s global reach and reinforced its mission to support anaesthesia education in all settings.
Prof Elkassabany said:
“I am deeply honoured to step into the role of Editor-in-Chief of Update in Anaesthesia. My goal is to continue the journal’s vital mission: bridging gaps in clinical knowledge and providing accessible, high-quality education to anaesthesia providers across the globe. Together with our editorial team, I look forward to fostering innovation, providing scholars from all parts of the world with a platform to disseminate their work, and supporting the clinicians who deliver life-saving care every day.
As I begin my tenure, I also want to extend my sincere gratitude to the outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Professor Chris Lundgren, for her leadership and dedication, which have significantly strengthened the journal’s impact.”
Alongside the announcement of Prof Elkassabany’s appointment, the WCA session also launched the new Update in Anaesthesia special issue on Perioperative Patient Blood Management (PBM).
