Dr Jolene Moore, Chair of the Safe Steering group, on her experiences leading SAFE and why she is excited about the future.
When I was provided with the opportunity to teach on my 1st SAFE course, little did I know what it would lead to. Since then, I’ve had the privilege to be involved in many courses, across numerous countries, and to become more formally involved in the SAFE programme, and its development. It’s been an incredible journey, not only for SAFE, but also for me personally.
The SAFE programme is so much more than training, and the impact goes far beyond the reported improvements in knowledge, skills and practice recognised through monitoring and evaluation and research.
It’s the personal stories participants and fellow trainers share – the participant who excitedly describes the patient they managed or the life they saved with their new-found knowledge and skills; the participant who goes on to become a trainer sharing knowledge all across their country; the trainer who goes from teaching to enthusiastically directing a course; the trainer who proudly describes the improvements they observed in participants’ practice; and hearing about the cascade of knowledge across facilities, regions and countries.
It’s the personal networks you build with anaesthesia providers across the world.
It’s all of you who make SAFE special and have helped to grow SAFE to where it is today. You are all amazing, and I’ve learnt so much from all of you – my SAFE family, and I’m excited to see where the next 10 years take us. Happy SAFE Anniversary!
