WFSA statement on patient safety for WHO Exec Board

The WFSA board have presented the following statement on ‘Global Action on Patient Safety’ at the 148th World Health Organisation (WHO) Executive Board Meeting.

WFSA is a Non-State Actor in official relations with WHO. The statement was presented orally by WFSA’s Secretary, Professor Daniela Filipescu on 21 January 2021.

Agenda item 5: Global action on patient safety

The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), in partnership with the WHO Global Patient Safety network and in support of the Global Patient Safety Action Plan and the World Patient Safety Day Resolution, are at the forefront of efforts to improve and embed patient safety into clinical practice.

Patient safety is at the core of our work to enhance global anaesthesia and perioperative safety and quality.

Healthcare worker wellbeing and health are vital for patient safety and we welcome the adoption of the Health Worker Safety Charter.

WFSA calls on:

  1. Member states to prioritise frontline caregivers, including anaesthesia providers, in their national COVID vaccination programmes, and for;  
  2. Ministries of Health to work with WFSA member societies to develop and implement national patient safety action plans that are aligned to universal health coverage.
