In memoriam: Prof Cong Quyet Thang

We were deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Professor Cong Quyet Thang earlier this week.

Professor Thang was a highly respected leader in anaesthesia in Vietnam, and very well known also outside his country, in particular for his involvement in regional anaesthesia and pain management initiatives.

Born in Hanoi in June 1958, Professor Thang studied at Hanoi Medical University where he also completed his residency in 1984. He subsequently undertook specialised anaesthesiology training at Amsterdam Academic Medic Centrum in the Netherlands and at Necker Enfant Malade Hospital in France. Professor Thang became Head of Department of Anaesthesiology and SCIU at HuuNghi Hospital in Hanoi in 2006 and was the author of more than 40 scientific papers in Vietnamese and English publications.

He had a particular interest in topics such as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery(ERAS) and Non-invasive Continuous Hemodynamic Monitoring, and was a frequent contributor to international conferences including the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in 2020 and 2024. Professor Thang served as President of CASA (the Confederation of ASEAN societies of Anesthesiologists) for many years and was President of the Vietnamese Society of Anesthesiologists since 2012.
