Webinar: Perioperative medicine

Wednesday 30 July 11:30 BST – 12:30 CET – 06:30 EST – 16:00 IST

Moderators:

  • Denny Levett (United Kingdom)
  • Guy Ludbrook (Australia)

Speakers:

  • Denny Levett (United Kingdom)
  • Guy Ludbrook (Australia)
Learning Objectives:

1- Current practices and future challenges in post operative high acuity care

It is increasingly recognised that there is a high incidence of undetected early postoperative complications in some patient groups managed on standard hospital wards.

In response to this, a number of (often anaesthesia-led) early high acuity care models have evolved which, in effect, extend and enhance the care provided by Recovery Rooms (PACUs).

There is emerging evidence of what models generate improvements in outcome and cost, and the nature of those improvements. Research activity in this area is increasing. An international Network is now established to advance education, research, and implementation in this field.

This starts to allow clinicians, and healthcare providers and funders, to evaluate the evidence against their health systems to make informed decisions on whether to consider trialling or implementing such an approach.

Objectives:

  • To understand the unmet need in early postoperative care
  • The nature of the unmanaged problems, and their sequelae
  • The patient groups at risk
  • To understand the range of early high acuity care models available
  • To understand the benefits and value (outcome and cost) which may be generated by these models
  • To understand the implementation opportunities and challenges in introducing these models

2- Prehabilitation evidence and directions

The role of prehabilitation in perioperative care.

Objectives:

  • To understand the rationale for prehabilitation
  • To understand the importance of pathway transformation for prehab implementation
  • To understand the definition of and core components of multimodal prehab
  • To understand the evidence supporting the clinical effectiveness and mechanism of prehabilitation
